No tickets for women in Politics...?

Love or hate India’s male-dominated politics, you can't ignore politics. 15th Lok Sabha polls are around the corner. Forget about the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), or the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or the 3rd Front. It’s time to introspect that women in India have less than 10 percent representation in parliament even though they make up 44 percent of the voting population. The fact is that the much talk about 30 percent women’s reservation bill is gaining dust in Parliament. Is politics a distant cry for women in India or a time say no to political parties who have tickets to women?

71st WORLD AROUND: THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN NATION BUILDING
A brain storming dabate on the topic “Role of media in nation building” was presented by the A Group on November 28 under the guidance of Fr. George Plattotham and Mr. Mary Dasan. The group was divided into two parts– one group for the motion and the other against the motion. And each group consisted five members. The whole debate went on for about two hours. It was moderated by Mridusmita Choudhary, a student of MABJ first semester. The debate was judged by the three judges, Jeffry Tom Jose, Fr. Sebastian and Monjib Mochahari. At the end of the debate the audience had an opportunity to raise questions for the clarification, which was another interesting part of the debate. However, the debate was won by the group which was in for the motion and Justin Judin, a second year student was acclaimed the best speaker of the debate.

The 70th WORLD AROUND programme was held on the 14th Nov. '08 at NISCORT at 2 pm. Mr. Kamal Nayan Kabra, an experienced economist, was the main speaker of the day. The topic was “The Global Economic Crisis”. He spoke of the 'domino' effect of the economic crisis the world over - the drop in purchasing power affecting the lack of movement of goods, which in turn has caused the sharp rise in prices, and consequently employes being laid off. He explained at length the various liberal policies (in the US & Europe) that were some of the primary factors responsible for this crisis. As he concluded, he suggested that the world must move from a 'fictitious' economy to a 'real' economy!

TERROR STRIKES: A LESSON TO LEARN

MONJIB MOCHAHARI: Enough is enough, terrorists have killed more than a thousand people since the UPA government came to power in 2004. Despite repeated terror strikes in almost all the major cities of the country, the government does not have an answer to deal with terrorists. The innocent lives lost and those who are injured due to terror strikes don’t have any meaning to our politicians. Every terror strike has become an opportunity for our political netas to engage in a blame-game rather than solving the problem of terrorism. In fact, it has already become the game of the politicians where they can score maximum votes. Where the government of India has gone? Is it because the government has spent more time giving lip services? Or is it because the government has to balance its vote bank politics with terrorists? At this point of time, the people all over the country are not at all interested to know who is sacked from the Cabinet minister or who has become the new home minister. The country needs to hear what actual steps have been taken to tackle the problem of terrorism. The political netas should apologize for failing to protect the lives of the common people. The country needs safety and security, not corrupt and inefficient government. In the Bible it is written, “When the David’s soldier saw Goliath, they all said, he is too big we can kill him. But David said, he is so big I can’t miss him”.

The 69th WORLD AROUND programme was held on the 7th Nov. '08 in the basement hall of NISCORT at 2.30 p.m. The presentation was done by the students group in-charge of documenting the events for October '08. The group members were: Dhanya Thomas, Joseph Rai, Anand Hembram, Malini, Mridusmita, Rosemary, Justin Judin, Franceena Francis, Albert Abraham, and Joby M.J. The theme of the presentation was “MOULDING.” The presentation was done through three different media: Print (MAGAZINE), Audio (RADIO PROGRAM) & Video (DOCUMENTARY). As always, at the end of the presentation, there was an evaluation by the students, conducted by the dean of studies, Fr. John Edappilly. While the presentation was well appreciated, there were also a few areas for improvement suggested.

LETTER'S TO THE EDITOR

JULIE EKKA: Elections...votes..! what i really don't understand is 'do politicians actually work for the people, and help in nation building..all their promises turn out to be fake once they come to power.

Fr.THISAI.GERRY: Mumbai terror broke out on the very same day U.S.A celebrated the thanksgiving day. British,U.S & Jews were identified by the terrorists. Can you guess anything ? Think !

MONJIB M: Waves of shock and owe, anxiety and fear - a tightrope walk for the corporate tycoons, agony for the common people and pink slips for the employees. This is the fruit of "Globalisation".

FR. ADAIKALA RAJ: Elections are on. But still 80% of the people's lives are on off-modes. Elections are to lighten the lives of the politicians and to darken the common people's life.

DHANYA: But India is very much used it now. It is not the responsibility of a single person to change the system. A collective effort has to be taken to tackle this issue. Good leaders are yet to be born.

JAMES: India has the largest number of non-schoolgoing working children in the world. Why has the government not removed them from the labor force and ensure that they attend school.As we have seen in the developed countries where child labour is not an issue at all

MONJIB: Elections as usual, like the last time. And the problems have multiplied. The issues lay unaddressed. Like the last time. This is the way politics work. Should we allow it to happen again before our own eyes.

JAMES: Mizoram Assembly Election-Lets Remember in our prayer" campaigning now is at its peak for the Mizoram Assembly election schedule for 2nd December, 2008. We hope that the process will be completed in a desire manner and lets pray for this."

ABHISHEK P: Monjib, I agree with you. It’s a matter of serious concern in a civilized society like India. And our Indian society society should also become vigilant against all terrorists of whatever religion or group. As communal riots were major danger in twentieth century, terrorist attacks are for 21st century. So we should forget that we are Hindus, Muslims or Christians and should start thinking as an Indian first.

MRIDUSTMITA: it is right that the youth of today are not interested in politics, neither to vote though they know change can be made by doing so. They have eyes but prefer to be blind. They think just by criticizing things will change; I would definitely like to join civil services, police or maybe politics in near future in order to change our nation. "No nation is perfect, but it is we who need to bring the change".

MONJIB: Should we be proud of our political system? If I’m asked to reply such question, I would definitely say no. The reason is simple: Politicians in our country are all prisoners of religion, caste system, corruption. If religion and caste are the main strategies for winning every election, then we have no reason to be proud of our political system, rather we should look for an alternative where every citizen of the country has a say in the administration.
